Akandem Farms undertakes commercial production of maize, soybeans and rice seeds to enhance availability, accessibility and affordability for smallholder farmers and commercial farmers in the agricultural seed value-chain ecosystem. The company has 250 metric tons’ capacity warehouses with a seed cleaner to enhance the quality of seed for production and productivity. This is made possible on a well-established 500-acre model farm located in Chuchuliga in the Builsa North Municipality of the Upper East Region.
Akandem Farms also has a well-equipped mechanization center that provides ploughing, harrowing, planting, threshing and harvesting services to other farmers across the Upper East Region. The center currently 6 tractors, 6 threshers, 1 multi-purpose combined harvester and 1 haulage truck to enhance end-to-end service delivery.
Akandem Farms Limited also operates as an anchor farmer/outgrower to smallholder farmers in Northern Ghana. Currently, over 4075 active farmers, mostly women and youth, benefit from mechanization services such as tractor services for land preparation & planting, threshing, input credit schemes, warehousing and aggregation services for storage of grains to reduce post-harvest losses, grain cleaning, transportation and market linkages. The input credit is usually in the form
of fertilizer, pesticides and seed. The value chains covered include maize, soya beans, rice, groundnut, sorghum, cowpea and vegetables.
Additionally, Akandem Farms provides training on Good Agronomic Practices (GAPs) to smallholder farmers to enhance their capacities to increase their crop yields and profitability. This has proven to be helpful in enhancing food security and incomes of rural farmers as they gradually drift from subsistence farming to adopting business approaches to Agriculture.
